LEAP honors those who make a difference

Ricardo Martinez
Federal Magistrate Judge

U.S. Senator Patty Murray recognized the accomplishments of Judge Ricardo Martinez, whom she nominated as a Federal District Court Judge, the first Latino nominated in Washington state history.

Judge Martinez, the child of migrant farm workers, currently is a Federal Magistrate Judge in Seattle.

Sarita McReynolds, Kennewick High School was awarded as 2003 Educator of the Year at the LEAP annual education conference.

Sarita, was nominated for the honor by some of her former students now attending the University of Washington. "Sarita has shown for many years complete dedication to the development of her students, academically, culturally, spiritually and mentally," say her former students. "In addition to the classroom, she dedicated countless hours to the ballet folkorico dance program at the high school. She is an inspiration and a gift."

Sarita's award read:
"For selfless dedication to her students and teaching them that 'life's a baile (dance)."

Bob Craves
Co-founder of Costco Wholesale & Washington Education Foundation

2003 Outstanding Service Award was given to Bob Craves, co-founder of Costco Wholesale and the Washington Education Foundation. The award read:

"For unwavering dedication to the principle of equal access to higher education for all students residing within our borders."

Norma Cuevas, one of more than 400 Latino students now benefiting from the work of Costco and the Washington Education Foundation, presented the award. Steve Thorndill of the WEF accepted for Mr. Craves, who was out of the state and could not attend.

2nd Annual Noche Cultural

With the help of Dr. José Cuellar, the 2nd Annual Noche Cultural at LEAP's education conference is Olympia was a big hit.

Dr. Cuellar, aka, Dr. Loco of Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeño Band, a nationally acclaimed musician and educator was, simply put, himself. Meaning full of energy, wit, savvy, charisma, and, as always, "hip." The students quickly get comfortable and, this year, so did the parents.

It was a great evening of fun, humor and talent. Some photo highlights.

Students, parents and participants were what the 2004 LEAP education conference was all about… all directed at improving academic achievement of Latino/a students.
